KS Service Center and ArcelorMittal Introduce 1,250 Electric Steel Deliveries per Year

Sustainability is a key priority for KS Service Center, and our approach extends beyond sustainably produced steel. Transport and the reuse of materials also play an important role in reducing total CO₂ emissions. That is why KS Service Center and ArcelorMittal work closely together to make the entire steel supply chain more sustainable.

The next step in this partnership is the transition to fully electric transport for all steel deliveries from Ghent and Liège to KS Service Center in Moerdijk.

1,250 electric steel deliveries every year

Approximately 1,250 steel deliveries are made each year. This means that an average of five to six electric trucks transport steel to Moerdijk every day.

By switching to electric transport, KS Service Center and ArcelorMittal save approximately 125 tonnes of CO₂ each year. In doing so, both companies are taking a tangible step towards a more sustainable and future-proof steel supply chain.

This development is important to KS Service Center because an increasing number of customers consider the carbon footprint of the products they purchase. This applies to customers in a wide range of sectors, including construction, logistics, solar energy and agriculture.

From an initial project to a long-term partnership

The partnership began with a limited project involving the supply of low-carbon XCarb® steel. It has since developed into a long-term initiative to make the entire transport flow between ArcelorMittal and KS Service Center more sustainable.

XCarb® steel is produced using recycled materials and renewable electricity, giving it a significantly lower carbon footprint. By considering not only steel production but also transportation, the environmental impact of the entire supply chain can be reduced even further.

In addition to the environmental benefits, this approach also provides strategic and commercial advantages for steel processors further down the supply chain.

Sustainable transport without compromising delivery reliability

The transition to electric steel transport presented several challenges. The driving range and maximum load capacity of electric trucks had to be considered. It was also important to find transport companies with a sufficient number of electric vehicles.

Through close cooperation, KS Service Center and ArcelorMittal have established a reliable logistics network. As a result, the deliveries can be carried out electrically without affecting delivery times or reliability.

Within this project, sustainability and reliable delivery go hand in hand.

Keeping valuable raw materials in the cycle

The partnership goes beyond electric transport. KS Service Center and ArcelorMittal also work closely together in the area of recycling.

The scrap generated during steel processing at KS Service Center is carefully separated by type. It is then returned to ArcelorMittal in Belgium, where it is reused in the production of new steel.

This keeps valuable raw materials in the cycle and minimises material waste. Steel can be recycled repeatedly without losing its quality, making it an important material for a circular economy.

Working together towards a more sustainable steel supply chain

The partnership between KS Service Center and ArcelorMittal demonstrates that concrete steps can also be taken within an energy-intensive industry to reduce its impact on the climate. By viewing production, transport and recycling as one integrated process, the carbon footprint of the entire supply chain can be reduced.

The transition to 1,250 electric steel deliveries per year is an important step in this process. At the same time, both companies continue to explore new opportunities to strengthen their partnership and make the steel supply chain even more sustainable.

At KS Service Center, we do more than talk about a sustainable supply chain. Together with our partners, we put sustainability into practice.
